Inter-caste Marriage-No One Came to Shoulder the Father’s Body

A deeply painful and shameful example of caste discrimination has emerged from Bargarh district in Odisha. Here, because the sons had entered into inter-caste marriages, their father was denied dignity even in his final journey.

An incident from Bargarh district in Odisha has raised serious questions about humanity and social attitudes. In Kantapada village of Paikmal block, a man had to transport his father’s body on a bicycle for the funeral. It is alleged that due to the family’s social boycott, no one in the village came forward to help with the final rites.

According to reports, after the death of an elderly man who had been suffering from a prolonged illness, the family faced immense difficulty arranging his funeral. It is said that the deceased man’s sons had married outside their caste, after which the family had been socially boycotted in the village.

After their father’s death, the family appealed to the villagers for help with the funeral, but no one was willing to shoulder the body or provide any other assistance. The family then tried to arrange a hearse, but due to financial hardship and the remote location, no ambulance could be made available in time.

Finally, out of sheer helplessness, one of the sons tied his father’s body to a bicycle with a rope and walked alongside it to the cremation ground.
